Version 0.8.1 - Admin Bugs

Okay, I got eoCMS 0.8.1 beta installed with SQLite.  The installation went perfect.  But there are some bugs in the admin panel that I must mention.  Most of them have to do with the layout, actually.  But they may not.  Until I am sure, I'll keep the thread in this board.

I'm tired right now, so I'll wait until tomorrow to report these bugs in detail.  Sorry about that.

Meanwhile, there's something that's really bothering me, and it may not be a bug, but since we're here already, I'll say it:

When I try creating a new category (I'm being forced to create one, since there is none, so I suggest that you include at least one default category in the database during installation), I'm asked to input the URL of an image to represent that category.  While that is a nice feature (but it'd be even nicer if we could also choose to upload the image from the computer), I am being FORCED to do so in order to create the category.  That is not nice at all.  I don't want to create an image for any categories at this time.  I just want to test the features.  So, two more suggestions: 1) please make it optional; 2) at least include a default category graphic in the case that we don't have any at that moment, as we can always change it later.

That's all I have until tomorrow.

I think there are a number of situations where default graphics are needed, for instance guest avatars could be used, default avatars for new users.

Re: Version 0.8.1 Beta - Admin Bugs

so it would be better to provide default, than to force you to use something you dont have (I think this was changed before, may somewhere else requiring images)

That theme I made, did not use any images, including the main header image

Even so, I don't pretend to use images for my categories.  I never used that feature before in any CMS and never needed to.  So if could be made optional...

Thank you very much, Confuser!

I'm sorry...  I've forgotten about those bugs.  I'll try the new release first, though.  Maybe they're gone.  ^^

Re: Version 0.8.1 - Admin Bugs

Ok, double post.  Sorry.

I changed the title of this thread to 'Version 0.8.1 - Admin Bugs'.  I am going to talk about the admin panel's layout... a lot.  Because it is bugging me... in many aspects.  And I don't mean any offense, but... that panel needs some serious adjustments, layout-wise.  As do some other areas of the CMS.  But this one's more serious.

First things first!

Before going into the subject of admin panel layout bugs, I must report the following:

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/2937/bug007.png

That is what I got while I was updating the installation.  And I THINK I had similar errors when I installed Beta 0.8.1.

Also, when I was back to the front page of the site, I couldn't see the admin panel link in the menu.  Was it removed on purpose?

Finally:

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/3299/bug008.png

o____0;  I think the screenshot says it all.

Now, onto the admin layout bugs!

First, I apologize for the horrendous handwriting you're about to see.  It's my tablet's fault, I swear!  (>.>;)

Second, I am going to mention things such as:

Description: Descriptions seem to be missing here and there, below each admin panel section's title (e.g. 'News').  Otherwise, it seems to appear where it shouldn't: after the content.  See the 'Bans' section.  Under the 'Current Bans' panel, when there are no bans, a message is shown: "Nobody banned".  Keep it this way for the other sections and that's what I mean.

Empty?  When some table is empty due to not having data (e.g. not having any forum boards created yet, or no categories for the news...), that area is just... empty.  No notification such as "No categories found" or "There are no boards" or the like.  Having those areas empty feel really odd.  There should be something, at least.  It's also confusing.  If you don't have anything to put in there and don't want to add such notification, then don't display the areas unless there's something to be shown.  Right?

No margins!  Look at the 'Panels' section for a great example of this.  Some elements in the page are CLUTTERED with others.  No margins or spaces between them.  It gives a feeling of disorder and inconsistency, especially when there are SOME panels that have more than enough space between them, or at least enough, in the same page.  There needs to be a consistency.  If you have trouble fixing this, perhaps you should revise your entire themes and page layouts and rewrite them as necessary.  And check for browser compatibility issues and such.  Add fixes for each browser.  If you can't make something in your design work properly, then don't use it until you're sure you can.  Find an easier alternative?

No graphics?  I am assuming that "Theme Settings" is a sub-section of "Site Settings", as "Categories" is a sub-section of "News".  If so, you should at least create some alternative graphic to identify sub-sections or reallocate (sp?) those links somewhere else in the layout.  But keeping them like that, without any graphics at all, while the rest has icons and everything...  They look like links that are "hanging" in the layout, or simply out of place.

Same old, again...  When I say this, what I mean is that the same problems keep repeating.  Most of these problems repeat in every section of the admin panel.  So instead of pointing them out every time, I'm just telling you that.  But you should know that already, and recognize them.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6532/bug016.png

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/121/bug017.png

Final words: If I sound too harsh, strict or anything, I am sorry.  But I am very careful with these things.  These errors seem to repeat in almost all (if not all) of the current themes.  Check 'em out, please.

Tested with Mozilla Firefox.

Re: Version 0.8.1 - Admin Bugs

Ok where you have put Description everywhere that is actually where the Update messages go like "The board has been added" etc. I will start work on those other issues now Wink

Also those errors with the updater are strange. I tested it with both fresh installs of SQLite and MySQL v0.8.0
EDIT: oh i know why you got those errors. The updater is for 0.8.0 only, the beta was only for testing purposes and was never going to have its own updater :/

Also http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/3299/bug008.png is not a bug of the CMS but rather your browser. eoCMS never ever keeps a password field filled in when there is an error etc

Please do not PM me requesting support or anything, use the forums, thats what they are here for

This is a note for theme developers: keep your themes cross-browser compatible, please.  It doesn't matter if it's a bug in my browser, it shouldn't be there.  And a browser as popular as Mozilla Firefox is one you should be careful with.  There are many guides and articles about fixing these bugs for every browser.  It is possible.  You can always make a browser check with PHP and add the corresponding fix then.  Or use Javascript...
Don't know what browser you're testing that originally with...  Also, I had never seen that before this upgrade.

Then perhaps you should not show that panel at all unless there's a message to be displayed.  It's pointless to leave it empty like that.  And that doesn't quit that the admin panel's description message is below the news, when it should be above the news.  Seems more logical to me, at least.

I'll delete that installation and start fresh again to get rid of future problems.  Smile

Thank you.  Smile

I agree with all of those errors though. They do make it look very chaotic and unorganized in a way.  The Add Category could be a button.  Just a normal html button.  That would solve that problem.

Re: Version 0.8.1 - Admin Bugs

Ok loads more pages to go through still. The margin thing between the buttons and the content i have only fixed in energy_blue so far. I have also started making them valid in the W3 validator, emoticons page passes 100% so far, i dont think i will concentrate on this though and i will probably only do it when i get bored Tongue
